Lady Grizzlies Kick Off Season

Golden Valley’s Lady Grizzlies Varsity Soccer team has officially started season. The first game of the season was on January 7th, with the Lady Grizzlies going head to head with Hart’s Indians and being defeated 8-0. The next time the Ladies took to the field was against the Canyon Cowboys and though the girls played with high intensity, they fell short by the end, losing the game 2-1.
The week of January 13th, the ladies prepared to play against Saugus on the 14th and Valencia on the 16th. In preparation for these games, Coach Freddy adjusted the formation the girls were playing from a 3-5-2 to a 4-3-3. Meaning there were 4 girls on the defending back line, three girls in the attacking midfield and three speedy girls up top that would wait for a ball to be sent to them so they could carry it to the goal and take a possible shot. Changing their formation allowed for the girls to create more plays in the middle of the field so they could adjust to either attack or defend the goal easier.
This formation ended up proving the girls could still hold themselves in league. When Saugus came to Golden Valley, the girls felt they were ready to take on the Grizzlies. The Lady Grizzlies came out onto the pitch with high hopes of flipping around their three game losing streak with this game. They did. The game ended in a 1-1 tie with Senior Bella Montiforte shooting a successful goal.
Montiforte was able to sneak a shot on Saugus’s keeper when a long ball was sent up the field towards Freshman Kaia Usher who headed the ball enough the go over the defensive line’s heads. Bella was right there to take the ball into the box and take a shot which ended the game in a tie.
Gaining this tie gave the girls the feeling as if they had won. In the team huddle after the game was over, Junior Mariah Garcia, team captain, told the team, “This tie keeps us in league!” and proudly the girls called out the grizzly chant, “Grizzlies on 3, 1-2-3, GRIZZLIES!”
